Our city centre streets have for too many years been blighted by the sight of streets full of ‘To Let’ boards aimed at students. Many boards seem to remain up almost all year round.

For a decade local Lib Dems have been campaigning to get the powers for Durham County Council to ban them. The council were misguided enough to refuse our requests and instead tried for years with voluntary schemes to control the boards, which predictably have not worked.

At last the council agreed to our demands and made an application to the Secretary of State for powers called a ‘Regulation 7 Direction’. This has now been granted for a period of 5 Years. The council will implement the Direction from 17th October.
