Liberal Democrat Councillors for Elvet, Crossgate, Highgate, Sidegate, St Nicholas and Gilesgate Bank Learn more
Hello. I’m Richard Ormerod, Lib Dem Councillor for Elvet & Gilesgate. I came to Durham from Lancashire in 1996, and liked it so much I’ve stayed ever since!
I’m married to Amanda and we have two children, Isabel & James, who attend Durham Johnston School, having also been to St Margaret’s and St. Oswald’s. We live in Durham City.
My “day job” is as a researcher with Redcar and Cleveland Council.
My main hobby is listening to music. I’ve got pretty eclectic tastes but I am especially fond of female singer-songwriters. Kate Bush first, by a mile, but I also greatly enjoy Jane Siberry, Claire Hamill, Gina Dootson, Suzanne Vega and many more.
Also high on my music list are jazz fusion (esp. Allan Holdsworth & Herbie Hancock) and progressive rock (where to start? King Crimson, Yes, Egg, Can, IQ, It Bites, Genesis (pre-1978), Pink Floyd (pre-1973), Mike Oldfield).
I also enjoy travel and discovering new places.
At the County Council I serve on the Economy & Enterprise and Highways Committees.
I am also a Charter Trustee for the City of Durham and a member of the University, New College, City and Police Liaison Group.
More recently I became a lay member of the Ethics Committee at the Department of Psychology at Durham University.
I can be contacted in the following ways:
