Only Lib Dems support replacing Leazes Footbridge.
The City of Durham Parish Council last week supported a motion from Lib Dem Councillors Richard Ormerod and Carole Lattin asking the county council to replace Leazes Footbridge when finances allow.
The bridge over the A690 has been closed since August 2023 due to structural problems. Local Lib Dems accept that there is not enough money to replace it straight away.
The Lib Dem motion also called for a crossing to be built into the Gilesgate roundabout on the western side (by the bridge) to help people cross safely.
Sadly, no Labour councillors would support the motion. One Labour councillor, Victoria Ashfield, even voted against.
The Green Party also voted against.
Lib Dem Councillor David Freeman said:
“It’s such a shame Labour decided to play politics, instead of uniting behind the community.”
“You would have thought that the Green Party would support policies that help people to travel on foot, but clearly not.”
“Only the Lib Dems are committed to the people of Durham City.”
