Many thanks for the magnificent response

by Elvet & Gilesgate Lib Dems on 4 April, 2017

Councillors David Freeman and Richard Ormerod would like to thank residents of Elvet & Gilesgate division for the magnificent response they have given us when calling round. We really do appreciate it.

It is clear that residents like the all-year-round approach of the Liberal Democrats, which involves keeping people informed about what’s going on with regular newsletters.

We have now knocked on every door in the division at least once. We are sorry if we missed you and will try to call back again before polling day.

I noted in your last focus paper that you were concerned about the number of to let signs in the city. This is a minor issue compared to the number of private landlords taking over city centre properties. This is having a detrimental effect on our beautiful historic environment. A lot of landlords fail to adequately maintain the properties giving the city a dirty rundown appearance. There is an increasingly disproportionate town and gown mix. Living in the city can feel like being on a student campus and must be off putting for family buyers.
Might I suggest that one solution for improving the situation would be the introduction of selective licences. Landlords would need to apply to the council for a licence to let. Conditions could be imposed for such licences to be granted, for example – maintaining the exterior – gardens and windows- having sufficient bathrooms etc.
I am aware that Sunderland introduced such a scheme many years ago with some success. I am sure they would be happy to share their knowledge.
I look forward to your views on the matter.
    Yours sincerely
