Liberal Democrats in Durham City are calling for controls on buskers in the city centre.
Councillor Richard Ormerod has submitted a motion to the City of Durham Parish Council calling on the County Council to develop a policy. At present there are no controls on street performers in the city centre.
Visitors have complained about the noise and say it is putting them off using local business.
Cllr Richard Ormerod said:
“We don’t want to stop street musicians and performers coming to Durham. They can enhance the atmosphere for shoppers.
“But if they are too loud, or in the wrong place for too long, this has damaging effects on local business.
“This is particularly relevant during the Covid-19 restrictions, which mean more people sitting outside pubs, restaurants and coffee shops.”
Seconding the motion, Cllr Liz Brown added:
“We want to work with musicians and the council to develop a policy that works for everybody.”
