Durham Rail Station disruption

by Group Office on 11 January, 2023

Network Rail is planning engineering work to improve reliability in and around Durham station.
The £6 million project will see ten points renewed, as well as 100 metres of track replaced. Network Rail will also upgrade signalling equipment in the area and improve platforms in the station.
These upgrades are designed to boost reliability and reduce disruption, leading to smoother journeys for customers on the East Coast Main Line.
To allow a key phase of the work to take place safely, there will be major changes to services for five consecutive weekends:
• Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 January
• Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 January
• Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 January
• Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February
• Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February
On these dates:
• Rail replacement buses will replace trains between York and Newcastle, calling at Northallerton, Darlington and Durham.
• One LNER train will run between Newcastle and York every hour, however this will take a diverted route with journey times being extended by approximately 60 minutes.
• LNER services to / from London King’s Cross will start/terminate at York.
• Services between Scotland and Newcastle will start/terminate at Newcastle.
Councillor David Freeman said: “Durham rail passengers are advised to check before they travel to, from or through Durham station while this important upgrade work takes place and to check their journey before setting off.”
