Your councillors are sorry to have to report the death of former Elvet County Councillor John Lightley. John had recently been residing in a nursing home, as had his wife Margaret, who also died recently.

John represented Elvet on Durham County Council from 1997 to 2005 and also represented his home village of Shincliffe on Durham City Council for many years.

A former Mayor of Durham, John was a great liberal who served our city with passion. His affable manner and huge commitment won him many friends and admirers.
