Sands HQ Common Land Protest Sat 17 Aug 1pm

by Elvet & Gilesgate Lib Dems on 13 August, 2019

Please join Durham folk on the Common Land at the Sands

Saturday 17 August, 1pm-2.30pm

Durham County Council closed the carpark and the coach park (registered as Common Land) on August 12, to begin work on their HQ.

Please come and join us on the coach park.  Any person has the right to open access to Common for open air recreation. Come and stroll – and picnic if you like.  Bring us written messages you would like us to pass on to your Council. Let DCC know how you feel about their HQ / the closure of the car parks / seeking de-registration of common land / them taking space in the city centre which could otherwise serve the public good.

Please join us on the 17th. Write your message down. We will take them all to the Council. You can also e-mail your message to us.

(Please keep messages – and protest on the 17th – civil, free of swearing etc).

I will be joining you on Saturday as I deeply oppose DCC plans to move to the Sands. In addition to concerns and objections I have already made to the council I also wish to protest at the proposed de-registration of common land (and the illegal fencing off) at the Sands and also the destruction of trees on the site.

I recently (6/8/19) emailed the following message to
    Simon Henig
    Stuart Timmiss
    Joy Allen
    Terry Collins
but have yet to receive a response

I wish to express my condemnation of Durham County Council’s decision to move to the Sands. The original announcement that the council had decided on the move without seeking any opinion from Durham residents, to its use of Kieir to submit the plans and then approve it’s own application and the planning committees permission (by all 8 labour councillors) whilst ignoring widespread opposition during the consultation process will result in the loss of the Sands car and coach park and further detriment to the city in increased traffic flow, congestion and pollution. This seemingly selfish plan will mean this vital amenity will be a loss to shoppers, day visitors and tourists and will I believe have a serious impact on the city centre economy.
From its original assertion that council employees would pop in to Durham on their lunch break and spend – the council now try to justify their decision by claiming it is all about the jobs they hope to create at Aykley Heads- more traffic congestion around Sniperley and Northend.
A new County Hall could have been built on the existing Aykley Heads site with few objections or any number of sites in County Durham. I fully support and commend Durham Parish Councils opposition to this deeply unpopular scheme and even hoped that DCC might have seen sense even at this late stage.

I have also contacted our MP (Dr Roberta Blackman-Woods) with my concerns.

    Yours Sincerely
    Mr. T. Laws (DH7 7LS)
