On Sunday 19 May Durham Kayak Club organised a clean-up of the River Wear between Prebends Bridge and Framwelgate Bridge.

We had 11 paddlers out at various times during the day supported by 7 bank-based support pickers (including Councillors Liz Brown, Richard Ormerod & Mandy Ross). 14 bags of “small rubbish” were collected along with and several larger items: – these included a wheelie bin (half full of rubbish!), 5 construction barriers, a pallet and two very large plastic plant pots.

Durham County Council provided the equipment and collected the refuse later.

Many thanks to all who came, we are happy to have made a small contribution to our local environment and prevented a small amount of plastic reaching our oceans.
