Labour votes for Council HQ on The Sands

by Elvet & Gilesgate Lib Dems on 5 March, 2019

This afternoon the Planning Committee voted by 8 (Labour) votes to 6 (opposition) to approve in principle the new Council HQ on The Sands.

Both Councillors Richard Ormerod & David Freeman spoke against, as did Lib Dem committee member Cllr Mark Wilkes.

Cllr Richard Ormerod said:

“It’s a sad day for Durham. The extra traffic and pollution will cause havoc for residents of The Sands.

“But there is still hope. The Secretary of State will now look at the plan and may decide to refuse it.”

I wish to voice my objection to Durham County Councils plan to build their new HQ in the city. The chosen location on the site of the Sands car/coach park makes no sense at all. Not only does it take away vital parking for workers, locals and visitors but the access road is already a congested area. The cathedral ,being world heritage site bring in thousands of visitors. The prestigious university which is expanding also brings in increasing visitors. No doubt the councils employees will resort to park and ride facilities to avoid the congested city centre. This will impact on park and ride capacity for locals and visitors. Council HQ,s should sensibly be located out of town.
