Many residents will be happy to know that the County Council today agreed to the formation of a City of Durham Parish Council next year.
Councillors David Freeman and Richard Ormerod both spoke in favour, and unlike five years ago, nobody opposed it.
Councillor David Freeman said:
“It is great news that the council is now backing local people with setting up a new town council for Durham City centre. It is five years since the council shamefully voted against the previous attempt when a majority of city centre residents responding to the consultation supported it. The local Lib Dems have long campaigned for a local council and were pleased even more people supported the idea in last year’s referendum. Since the abolition of Durham City Council we have missed the benefits a more local council can provide. It will be another voice speaking up for our fantastic city.”
Councillor Richard Ormerod added:
“This is great news, our city will at last have the voice it deserves.”
