We are very pleased that 66% of residents who took part in the public consultation said they supported the proposal for a local council for the city centre and Nevilles Cross.
2,819 ballot papers were returned, of which, 1,856 were in favour of a new council. Durham County Council will discuss whether to give the go ahead in June. We will be arguing that the vote should be acknowledged and that we get a new local council.
Last time even though there was a vote in favour, the Labour Party opposed it and it did not happen.
We acknowledge however that not everyone is supportive of the idea. A new town/parish council needs to ensure it is not just a “talking shop” but achieves real benefits for us in Durham and is not expensive.
Labour run town councils in County Durham have increased Council Tax to hundreds of pounds. This would not be acceptable to us or local residents.
